How to get your business mentioned in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews
How do AI assistants decide which businesses to mention?
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews answer many questions by searching the web first and then summarising what they find. If your business is not in those search results, or the information about you is unclear or inconsistent, the assistant has nothing reliable to cite. Getting mentioned therefore starts with classic SEO and adds a few extra steps.
1. Make sure you can be found at all
AI search tools rely on search indexes. Google powers AI Overviews, and Microsoft’s Bing index is used by Copilot and by other assistants for web search.
- Check that your pages are indexed in Google Search Console.
- Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools (you can import it from Search Console in one click).
- Don’t block search crawlers in
robots.txt. Decide deliberately whether to allow AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot.
2. State clear facts about your business, the same way everywhere
Assistants combine information from many sources. Make your core facts easy to find and identical everywhere: your name, what you do, where you are, who you serve, since when, and how to contact you. Use the same wording on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directory listings.
3. Answer questions directly
Write your pages so that each important question gets a short, direct answer of two or three sentences at the top, followed by the details. AI tools prefer content they can quote without rewriting. Good formats:
- an FAQ section on each service page
- question-style headings (“How much does…?”, “How long does…?”)
- comparison tables and numbered steps
- concrete numbers: prices, timelines, sizes
4. Use structured data
Structured data (Schema.org) tells machines what your page is about: your organisation, services, FAQs, articles and reviews. It doesn’t guarantee a mention, but it removes ambiguity about who you are and what you offer.
5. Collect real reviews
Assistants often mention businesses that people speak well of. Ask every satisfied customer for a review on Google and on the platforms that matter in your industry. Never buy reviews: it violates platform rules and, in the EU, consumer protection law.
6. Get listed where your industry looks
Being mentioned on trusted third-party sites, such as industry directories, local business listings, review platforms, partner websites and press, gives assistants independent confirmation that you exist and do what you say.
7. Keep content fresh
Show “last updated” dates on important pages and review them regularly. Outdated prices or services lead to wrong answers about you.
8. Measure what AI brings you
In Google Analytics, create a channel group for visits from AI tools (for example chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com). Once a month, also ask the assistants the questions your customers would ask and note whether, and how, you are mentioned.
What about llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed file that gives AI tools a short summary of your site. It is easy to add and does no harm, but there is no evidence yet that major assistants rely on it. Treat it as a small extra, not a strategy.
Summary
There is no trick to getting mentioned by AI. Be easy to find, easy to understand and easy to trust: indexed pages, consistent facts, direct answers, real reviews and mentions on trusted sites.
